2021 Fall Season - Playoff Round 1 Recap

The first round of playoffs began this past week with some close games, and also some blowouts, as teams battle on their way to the championship.

(1) Free Agents 38 vs 28 (8) Hong Kong Football Team

In this game between the top seeded Free Agents and the lowest seeded HK Football Team, the Free Agents maintained their position as the top team in the league in a closer than anticipated match up. The Free Agents lead for the majority of the game, with 3 quick touchdowns from QB Steve Suh. However, two back to back turnovers in the second half brought the Hong Kong Football Team back within two scores.

Unfortunately the HK Football Team couldn't pull out the upset. QB Emilio Zhang led the team with 4 touchdowns to 4 different receivers.

The Free Agents head into the second round of playoffs this week while the Hong Kong Football Team enters the consolation bracket for a chance to claim the third place title.

(4) Samurai Dragons 27 vs 6 (5) IcyHots

In the first round matchup between the 4th and 5th seed, the Samurai Dragons took this win over the injury ridden IcyHots. The Dragons cruised through this game, with QB Keisuke Nagai throwing for 4 touchdowns, with 3 to WR Ryo Nishikawa and another to WR Minoru Nakashima. On the defensive side of the ball, CB Takaaki Sakagami led the defense with an interception.

The IcyHots held their own despite being shorthanded on players. QB Tyler Treece led the team with one score, but unfortunately could not get the offense going in any rhythm.

The Dragons will continue to the second round of the winners bracket while the IcyHots will enter the consolation bracket to claim third place.

(3) Ballhawks 21 vs 14 (6) Lost Boys

In the closest game of the first round, the Ballhawks defeated the Lost Boys in a back and forth game between both teams.

The Ballhawks continue their winning streak, entering the playoffs as the hottest team in the league. Led by QB Andy Schultz, along with the return of WR Kevin Recco, the Ballhawks were able to keep the Lost Boys in check.

The Lost Boys came up short in this close fought game but have much optimism and a bright future for their team. Over half of the Lost Boys current roster were rookies or have never played together, and were able to muster a few clutch wins towards the end of the regular season.

The Ballhawks will enter the second round of the winners bracket while the Lost Boys enter the consolation bracket for a shot at third place.

(2) Thundercats 4vs 6 (7) Lantau Buffaloes

The Thundercats won this game in resounding fashion, overcoming a key loss in the highest scoring game of the first round.

Led by QB Fred Davies, the Thundercats dominated on both sides of the ball, with multiple touchdowns thrown by Davies to 4 different receivers. On the defensive side, multiple 5th down stops and interceptions allowed the Thundercats to hold the Buffaloes to single digits.

The Buffaloes had their opportunities to move the ball up the field but were hindered by mistakes on both sides of the ball. QB Jay Ma threw for his only touchdown to go to receiver Rocky Ramos.

The Thundercats, with their victory, will enter the second round of the winner's playoffs while the Buffaloes will join the consolation bracket for third place.
